Applications are now open for the 2025 Feminist Economics Summer School. The Institute for Economic Justice (IEJ) is pleased to invite applications for the 2025 Feminist Economics Summer School, taking place in person from 01 to 05 September 2025 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Eligibility criteria
Applicants must meet at least one of the following requirements:
- Hold a degree in economics, environmental sciences, social sciences, or politics;
OR
- Be an economist and/or practitioner or researcher in feminist economics.
IEJ strongly encourage applications from candidates across the African continent, with priority given to those based in Southern Africa. IEJ particularly welcome applications from women and individuals from underrepresented communities (including, but not limited to, marginalised ethnic groups, LGBTQI+ individuals, persons with disabilities, and those underrepresented by religion, geographic origin, or employment status).
Financial support
The IEJ will cover travel, accommodation, and visa costs for all selected participants.
Application Procedure:
The application should include:
- A 500-word abstract outlining a potential research or advocacy project that the applicant is involved with or wishes to take up as a result of the training they would receive at the FESS (which may be an essay, journal article, policy proposal, popular material, advocacy strategy, book chapter, and educational material) on any topics relevant to the FESS’s objectives and themes.
- The abstract should reflect an area of work and/or research interest and should have a place-specific focus on a country/region. IEJ aim to ensure the participation of non-academics and early-stage researchers and shall provide various kinds of support to shortlisted candidates, including technical support in developing the work, post-FESS support, and feedback on the project and financial assistance to cover costs of attending the FESS.

- Due to high interest, applications will close earlier if the number of submissions reaches 200, so early submission is strongly encouraged.
- Applications will be assessed on a rolling basis, and successful candidates will be notified during the final week of July 2025.
